The Bridges of the Early American Republic

Writer's picture: hylandm1hylandm1

The Gothic arch bridge is the Poinsett Bridge near Traveller's Rest, South Carolina. Dating from circa 1820, the design may reveal the hand of Robert Mills. The Roman arch bridge is the Casselman River Bridge at Grantsville, Maryland. Dating from 1813-1817, it is a key facility in the historic National Road. They both demonstrate valuable Early American Republic historic preservation projects from the twentieth century.
